A Clear Path From the First Conversation to Ongoing Retirement Planning
People often contact a financial advisor after they have already spent time thinking about retirement. They may have several questions, decisions already underway, or a change that made this feel like the right time to talk.
Dovetail primarily works with clients through an ongoing retirement planning and investment management relationship. The relationship follows a clear progression. The pace reflects what needs to be understood and decided.
These five steps do not mean five required appointments. Some steps may happen in one conversation. Others may take more than one. The work moves forward when the needed understanding is in place.
1. Introductory Conversation
The first conversation begins with what prompted you to reach out and what you want help thinking through. You can also ask about Dovetail, our services, and whether the relationship may fit.
This is not a presentation or a recommendation meeting. The purpose is to understand the reason for your outreach and decide whether a deeper conversation makes sense.
2. Discovery: Your Situation and Your Life
Discovery looks at what is happening now and what led up to it. We also talk about what you have done, what is already underway, and what you are considering next.
Your experiences with money matter, too. Understanding these influences helps Dovetail see how you approach financial decisions. It also provides context for how you respond to uncertainty and responsibility.
These conversations may happen together or separately. Detailed financial records are not required at this stage.
3. Build a Reliable Planning Picture
Detailed information gathering begins after you decide to work with Dovetail. We organize the relevant records and clarify what is known.
We also separate confirmed facts from assumptions. Missing or uncertain information stays visible until it can be resolved or its limits are clearly identified.
The goal is a planning picture that is dependable enough for analysis. Gathering and confirmation may happen in one conversation or across several contacts.
4. Compare Approaches and Make Decisions
Dovetail explains what the planning work shows and which decisions are ready for discussion. We compare possible approaches and make the consequences easier to see.
Some decisions may be ready to move forward. Others may need more information, more time, or a future review point.
The work may continue across more than one conversation. You should be able to understand what was decided, what remains open, and who is responsible for the next step.
5. Ongoing Adaptive Planning
Retirement planning continues after the initial decisions are made. Dovetail helps coordinate agreed actions and keeps important review points in view.
Broad reviews and check-ins can support the ongoing work. Targeted investment or tax discussions may also be useful. The scope should match what changed and what needs attention.
A review does not need to reopen every prior decision. It should clarify what changed, what still fits, and what needs attention now.
What Should Clients Expect During the First Year?
The first year usually begins with understanding and organization. The work then moves into analysis, decisions, and implementation. The timing depends on the work involved and any deadlines that need attention.
Clients should expect the work to include:
- Establishing the facts and assumptions behind the plan.
- Identifying the decisions that deserve attention first.
- Comparing approaches and discussing recommendations.
- Agreeing on implementation priorities and review points.
- Beginning the transition into ongoing planning and investment management.
As the relationship develops, you should be able to see what was agreed upon and what remains open. You should also know what may prompt another review.
Who May Participate?
Spouses and Partners
Participation can reflect how a couple works together. Both people should be able to understand the decisions that affect them, even when one person handles more of the financial details.
Trusted People
You may want a family member, friend, or other trusted person involved in selected conversations. Dovetail can include that person with your permission. Participation does not automatically give someone authority to act for you.
The Dovetail Team
Clients have a primary advisory relationship with backup coverage from the Dovetail team. This supports continuity when another team member needs to assist.
Outside Professionals
Some decisions may involve a tax professional, estate attorney, or insurance professional. With your permission, Dovetail can coordinate around the relevant facts. Each professional remains responsible for advice within that professional's role.
Where Does Crossroads Fit?
Crossroads helps clarify what deserves attention now and what can wait. It can support the work at different points in the relationship.
Crossroads sits alongside this progression. It is not another step that every client must complete.
How Can You Prepare for the Introductory Conversation?
You do not need to assemble a complete financial file before reaching out. The first conversation is about what brought you to Dovetail and whether it makes sense to continue.
It may help to write down:
- What prompted you to reach out now.
- What you want help thinking through.
- Any decision or deadline that already feels time-sensitive.
- Who else you may want involved if the relationship continues.
You may also want to ask:
- Which services are included in an ongoing relationship?
- How are fees calculated?
- What retirement planning experience does the team bring?
- Who would I work with, and what backup coverage is available?
- What should I expect during the first year?
- How do you work with spouses, trusted people, and outside professionals?
